Futaba
Futaba radios have no USB joystick mode, so they need one extra piece of hardware. There are three ways to do it.
The short version
Futaba transmitters have no built-in USB joystick mode. The USB socket on the radio is for data and firmware, not for sending your sticks to a computer. You therefore need one extra piece of hardware, and there are three ways to do it:
- A receiver-based adapter such as the RX2SIM — bind an ordinary receiver to your radio and plug the adapter into the Mac. This is the route with documented Mac support.
- Futaba’s own WSC-1 wireless dongle — binds straight to the transmitter with no receiver needed, but Futaba list Windows compatibility only.
- A trainer-port adapter — a cable from the radio’s trainer port to a PPM-to-USB adapter.
Receiver-based adapters
The RX2SIM Wireless Multi-Sim Adapter is the option with the clearest Mac story: RC-WARE state it is “for Windows PC and Mac”, and Futaba owners report using it on macOS with other RC simulators.
You bind an ordinary receiver to your transmitter, connect that receiver to the adapter with the supplied patch cable, and plug the adapter into the Mac. Your radio talks to it over its own protocol, exactly as it would to a model, so there is no trainer port involved and no cable to the radio.
It accepts a wide range of receiver signals — individual servo channels, PPM, Futaba S.Bus and S.Bus2, SRXL, Spektrum DSM2/DSMX satellites and JR DMSS satellites — so it isn’t tied to Futaba and works the same way for other brands.
Futaba’s WSC-1
Futaba make the WSC-1 Wireless Simulator Control, a USB dongle with an eight-channel S-FHSS receiver built in. You bind your transmitter to it the same way you would bind a receiver, so it needs no separate receiver at all — the neatest option in principle, with one significant caveat.
Trainer-port adapters
The trainer port outputs your channels as a PPM stream, and a small PPM-to-USB adapter converts that into a standard USB game controller. These are sold as “RC simulator USB adapters” or “PPM to USB flight simulator cables”. What matters is:
- The right plug for your radio. Futaba trainer ports vary by model — some take a mini-DIN connector, others a 3.5 mm jack. Check yours before ordering, as this is the usual mistake.
- It must present itself as a USB game controller and need no Windows-only driver. Generic PPM adapters, including the widely sold “22-in-1” type, are normally plain HID devices.
- Avoid adapters bundled with a specific simulator that require that simulator’s driver to function.
Resolution is set by the adapter rather than by your radio, so a low-cost adapter can produce coarser stick output than the same radio would over a native USB connection.
Setting it up
- Create a dedicated HeliSense model. Give it flat outputs — no expo, no dual rates, straight throttle and pitch curves, trims centred. Use an Airplane model type, or a Helicopter model with the swash type set to H-1 (single servo); other swash types mix aileron, elevator and collective together before the signal leaves the radio. - Bind the receiver or dongle to that model. If you’re using the trainer port instead, enable the trainer function and set the radio to act as the master (instructor) side, so the port actually transmits. On most Futaba radios the trainer port is silent until this is switched on.
- Connect the adapter or dongle to the Mac. Then switch the radio on.
- Open HeliSense Settings. Turn on USB Controller and look for the device in the Input Device picker. It will be named after the dongle or adapter, not after your radio.
- Run the setup wizard.
Channel order
The bundled Futaba trainer adapter (AETR) starter profile assumes aileron, elevator, throttle, rudder order. In practice the order depends on both your model setup and the adapter, so it’s a starting point rather than a guarantee — run the setup wizard and it will map whatever actually arrives.
If it doesn’t work
Work through the troubleshooting list, then use Copy Diagnostic Info and send it to us via the contact page, saying which dongle or adapter you used. Since none of these routes is confirmed yet, those reports are what will let us name hardware that is known to work.
